A minor interior phase of construction has been underway since April. New interior finishes, light fixtures and cabinetry were installed inside existing office and break room space. That portion of the work is almost complete with only final inspections outstanding. The major portion of the construction began this week. We are just underway with demolition of the masonry veneer on the front of the building.
The existing 4′ x 4′ CMU column surrounds were the first to go. While unwrapping the existing columns, we discovered that several hundred CMU blocks were inside. These block were simply dry-stacked in place, not bonded to anything.
As near as we can figure, these block were simply “wasted” inside the columns 30 years ago. This eliminated the need to dispose of them. It also may have increased the mason’s compensation as they were probably paid per unit laid. Now, what to do with all of this block?
